On September 12, 2024, WLHCA volunteers came together at the Wollaston Lake Road boat launch to support an important fish habitat enhancement project in partnership with Watersheds Canada.
Through this initiative, brush bundles are being placed in Wollaston Lake to help create shelter and habitat for small fish. Small fish need safe places to hide, feed, and grow, and these brush bundles provide important cover that can support healthier fish populations and contribute to the overall balance of the lake ecosystem.
Watersheds Canada offered this opportunity to several lakes in the Hastings County area as part of a Fish Habitat Enhancement Program. Wollaston Lake, along with other member lakes including Baptiste Lake, Lake St. Peter, and Diamond Lake, has been participating in the early phases of this habitat improvement work. The project is being led by Watersheds Canada with approval from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.
As part of the project, volunteers helped gather brush and create bundles approximately 5 feet in length and 3 feet in width. These bundles are designed to provide shelter and breeding habitat for small fish, helping to strengthen local aquatic habitat and support long-term lake health.
WLHCA is grateful to everyone who volunteered their time and effort to help with this project. Community involvement plays an important role in protecting Wollaston Lake, and projects like this demonstrate how local action can make a meaningful contribution to the health of the lake and its ecosystem.
